I'm not kidding, this is the real deal, but you probably don't want to dally.

If you read this Interview, with Kevin Carmony of Lindows...

well, you'll see his head shot, and realize he's quite proud of himself...

And kinda generous.

Check out page 3 of the interview. Ok.OK. It's in the Answer to Question 6.

Yep. A free copy of Lindows Developer 4.5. That also gets you straight Lindows 4.5, and the Lindows CD as well. Via Digital Download

OR you can use the $59.95 coupon, to have the $69.95 Retail Box sent for $10 plus shipping via Snail.

Enjoy. But hurrym they's gonna pull this promo quick. Their server's being hammered.

Waited till late night to give this a looky. went through all the BS and after I supposedly got this, and the confirm email, I get left on a page that wants to give me some 15 day trial thing, and of course take my CC info. Where's the link to go get the damn download?

And of course, for 56kps dialup it will be 24 hours.
I think I would need a "pal" who has cable modem to do the DL for me, or pay the $10 ship. Since I doubt I could play any of my games on this, no way. It's either freebie DL with no CC info taken, or it's cancelroo.

I got to the download with just having to create an account, no credit card stuff. I didn't want access to their warehouse downloads. The only thing is now I'm #208 in line to download. LOL Think I'll wait until later.

You're fine. No CC info is needed.

There is a thread at AnandTech, BTW. I should have given those props earlier.

Anyway, if you made it to the Free Trail for CNR, then as you said you'll get the mail and you have 'purchased' the product. Purchased for $00.00, but purchased none the less.

If you get back to that screen, you'll see you are a level or two down in 'mylogin'. While you can nav from the upper menu buttons, it is easier from the left hand menu (frame ?)

You were on the 'Welcome' page, you want the 'My Products' page. Then 'CD Downloads'.

____

For anyone else: I went in every circle possible last night before posting. I built accounts to get it shipped. I had my FW blocking the sites cookies and throwing me hither and yon.

Another headache is that, probably since they are secure pages, the little graphic image bubble buttons can take a while to load. Especially the 'Process Order' one on almost the last page.

It may look like your done, but you are not. That's why at Anand, you'll see folks talking about d/ling 'source'.

They do not have the order in place, and are getting the normally available open 'source', not the ISO's.

When done properly, you'll have 3 or 4 ISO's you can d/l.

Yes, one is for running Lindows from CD, without installing the OS to an HDD.

_____

I'll be borrowing a high speed connect in the next few days.

Sounds good. I hope they have it in another week or so. Maybe I can get to download and try it out. I know they have really worked on that OS alot since I got it at version 2.0....(which basically sucked at best) I've actually been hearing good things about it lately. So it may be worth a look atleast...

Yeah, got the email. And was on the page with the asking for the 15 day trial. I went into the My downloads link on left and found not just the one item listed, but the pile of them. I figured i would be just going through the order process all over again.

I would still need some VOLUNTEER pal on cable/DSL, to get the DL for me.
I can't have this rig online for 24+ hours straight. The other users would need to jump on, and the ISP/phone company will never let it ride without a disconnect or 2 or 3. And I already decided I ain't going to pay no $10+, for something I won't install for some time yet, which by then will be 2 versions old anyway. And for webbing the Bingoaholic will go berserk trying to lean something new. And my games won't work so it would be more of a wishful thinking deal till it really gets going.

Yeah that't the ticket. There are 4 good d/l's in there and 2 source folders.

I think I know where your volunteer is. The one that say: Lindows CD, is the one you can run from a CDRom without installing, BTW.

I don't get your 2nd sentence. Sounds like your saying get the CD. That's not a freebie deal anymore then.

Cable/DSL is "supposed" to be a 2 hour or abouts DL.

Nuh nuh no.

That 'purchase' got you at least 3 versions of the software.

The dev install ISO for 4.5

The straight, normal install ISO for 4.5

Both of those make installation CD's like everyone else.

But you can also download what they call the Lindows CD (ISO), which also makes a CD, but this CD is Not for installation, but to run the Lindows OS from your CDRom drawer.

Fully contained, no installing to an HD.

That's why some dudes will take these and plop them on a 1 gig key drive. You can run whatever you need, off someones USB port.

Has anyone installed this yet? I haven't got farther than the partition to install it to. I can't find an option to install on the unused hard drive space. I have about 9 gig waiting. It only sees the FAT partitions.

I also had to go back to my onboard video. After the initial startup screen it just faded to black. I have a similar problem working in dos but don't have this problem with Red Hat 7.2.

Any ideas?

OK so what happened with this install? Has anyone installed this yet or used the run from CD version?

I'm really more interested in the run from CD version right now.

Ms.A

Excuse me. Would you pick that up for me please?
I seem to keep loooosing my head!

I'll try and d/l and burn a copy of the CD Run version this weekend. (I guess that's today or so.)

I have the Dev version and made sure the CD booted, but haven't had a drive to really add it to.

We've had a couple of machines go out, but they have all been pretty quick builds and XP only.

I went from page 3 of the interview (Item 6) to the link lindows/buy it and found a LindowsLive (CD without install) for $29.99. I'm not finding the products>downloads area for free. Meanwhile, the specs mention 800 MHZ processor, mine's 600mhz, so I guess I couldn't try this anyway.
Sincerely, Nancy

Nancy, they have made this offer twice in the last 5 weeks or so.

The deals are fairly quick. Once the word starts traveling the numbers add up.

I'm sure we can post an update if it becomes available again.

____

Generally, generally... a Linux distribution can run with less CPU and memory power than a Windows System.

This one tries to run M$ applications and is newer so maybe the 800 MHz is the lower limit, I really don't know.

I do have a copy sitting on a 600 PIII machine, that needs to be burned out to disk. I can try to boot it there, but it'll be a few days before I can mess with it.

____

In any of the Linux installs, hardware recognition and compatibility is often the sore spot for folks migrating from Windows.

Seems like sometimes we don't see the forest for the trees, but Bill $ Co. have done a heck of a job, putting out a flexible, compatible OS for not really that much money.

____

But hey, a free disk that runs from the CDRom, is one heck of a way to find out.

Tell you the truth it's still going on. Using the link I posted in my thread about this, I was able to use the coupon, register and download again a couple of days ago. This time the wait was only about ten minutes for the download page. That was with me about 42 in line.

Thanks for letting me know what's going on with this. I'm on a dial up so I probably would be better with the disk. If I ever got it and tried the one that runs from the CD drive if my CPU wasn't enough it wouldn't hurt the computer would it?
Thanks.
Sincerely, Nancy

It's not just the CPU that is not enough but there are certain things about your system that need to be in order for Lindows to work. Take a look at the site and review what your system need to have in order to use it. I don't remember it off the top of my head.

Question: Since I got the CD from you, does one just boot to Win98 and then flip the OS CD in the drive and run it, or do we set the boot sequence to hit the CDROM before hard drive with the Lindows CD in the CDROM to run it off the CD?

That way I could check it out a bit without setting up one of my drives for this.

I still am moving stuff from the gamer W98 drive to the empty drive I got so I can try out XP Pro on that drive. My at home computing is going slow because of our remodeling. I got 3 doors left to varnish and some cement patching to do on floor, then carpet/linoleum comes, then I move my computer stuff in. So I didn't want to fart with bigger time consuming stuff till I get moved. Still haven't even used my new printer yet. Got no where to stick it yet.
