"Windows Vista the Problem???"
Nov-12-07, 08:35 PM (EST)
Have had new computer for two weeks and have had no problems other than I can no longer play games on Pogo! Pogo techs have said there is nothing else they can do for me. I have disabled virus, pop ups, and you name it. I have cleaned out cache, done scan disc's, checked for virus, and on and on, still can not play POgo games.I can log on to pogo and I can get to the game, but that is where it all ends, from there I get booted back to game choice page. Is there a possiblity that Windows Vista is the cause of this? I have been playing Pogo games for years, last computer was Windows XP and no problems. I hope some one can answer this for me. OH! also, I down loaded the latest version of Java as the Pogo techs recommended. Any information would be very much appreciated. Am very dissaponted that Techs from Pogo will no longer help, I pay a good price for the games every year. Thanks Sheila

Far as I can tell from my own experience it's one of the Vista updates. I haven't figured out which one yet. Have you ever been able to play Pogo on that computer?

Clarification.........(note boots just posted in while I was typing)
"no problems other than I can no longer play games on Pogo"

Does that mean you haven't been able to ever since you got the new computer (w/Vista), or was it working for a short time with the new computer?

If it did work, then maybe we are looking at settings and/or anti-spy apps you may have added or gotten updates for.

If from the start of using the new computer, that makes it tougher.
The thinking to update Java might be good, but I would think your old XP rig would have an older copy than the new Vista rig would.

In any case, is this the download you got for it......
Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 3 ?
..... via ... http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
(4th one down)

Just making sure you grabbed the correct one.
There is an install instruction link there under the title.

Since I don't allow IE7 to be on any of my computers, and don't have my copy of Vista installed yet, I can't speak to the settings to tweak for that, if it is a setting problem.

My mom here played on POGO in the freebies games, so can't say how the pay deal goes, but I bet the secure link they used to access it may be what's being screwed by the new computer's situation.

Something you can try while waiting for a reply from the Vista users here, is to try a different browser.............
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

I use an older copy of Firefox to access some pages my IE6 & spyware blaster host files won't let me get to (at times).

You'll have to import the favorite links from IE or type the pogo url into the firefox browser's address bar, otherwise your current link (start/favorites and/or desktop icon) will launch IE.

Game Rig....Web Rig.... 3rd Rig ___

I'm using JRE Version 1.6.0 (build 1.6.0_01-b06). Not updated since the original install. I also haven't updated Vista since July because of this very problem. That's about as far as I get before having problems. System Restore has worked for me so far, just not sure which update is doing it. Never seem to have the patience to do just one at a time. LOL

Haven't had a lot of time to mess with it but I guess I will now.

I think Ghouldini is right, something is changed that messes with Java's ability to download the applets.

Lets see if we can find out whats going on.

Try disabling the tray icon for Java. You should have a check box for it at the Jave console.

(Boots you may try and disable UAC as a test.)

I have UAC turned off. Never thought that might be it. Got June and July updates done last night and everything is fine. I'll start August and up tonight.

Before I do I'll turn UAC back on and see if that affects anything.

Got UAC turned back on. Cleaned tif's and java temp files so I would have to download the games again, everything worked fine.

The poo around the net seems to be, this is a plain 'ole config conflict.

Probably gonna revolve/resolve around Java and ActiveX or some flaky marriage thereof.

Seven's is now a damn nice browser.

(I don't know if there are still older configs that can't deal with it. I have been converting all the fairly new XP boxes over without issue.) (Fairly new being a couple of years old.)

_____

CC is closing out VisionTec X1950 Pro's, BTW. ~$75 AR. Being ATI, they actually have drivers that work in Vista.

Well, completely updated and Pogo still works. I agree that it's a conflict problem but I have no idea what I changed in the last few months that would have fixed the problem.

Yes, I like IE7 also now that I'm used to it.

But I still don't care for UAC, annoying that. Now to turn it off again.
